Flat White please -Flat White kiitos

I love Flat Whites. It is a type of coffee people are not very used to in Europe. Flat Whites in fact came to the UK during the time I have been living here. Before it was either americano, espresso or latte when you went to order your coffee. Flat White contains basically a couple of espresso shots (usually 2) with the foamy milk but it has less milk than latte so the flavour is stronger and it is not as heavy as latte. Flats Whites are typically Australian and New Zealander thing and Melbourne is the capital of flat whites. The city has so many coffee shops one after another that you can drink coffee every 10 metres. All of them are super good and it is difficult to find bad coffee in Melbourne! In London if I want to find a good coffee (which I have found surprisingly difficult) I usually go for Australian or New Zealander coffee shops as the quality is guaranteed. It seem, however, that it is mainly New Zealanders who have brought the coffee to London rather than Aussies.

The coffee shop I personally think is the best one in town is ”Grind”. It is located in Stratford shopping centre (another one is in Putney). The Flat Whites in this coffee house are phenomenally good and so are their Afghan biscuits. Afghan biscuits are almost like small cakes that are made of coco dough mixed with corn flakes and the biscuits have devilish chocolate topping -yum! I saw my Finnish friend the other day and we met in Stratford shopping mall and headed straight to Grind to have Flat Whites and Afghan biscuits. As soon as my cooker is fixed I will bake some Afghan biscuits and post you my favourite recipe!

Afghan biscuit. So good
Niin hyvää -afgaanileivos!

There are a few other amazing New Zealander coffee places in London that I can recommend:

All Press in Shoreditch.

Flat White in Soho.

Sacred in Soho, Highbury, Covent Garden and Westfield. Ganton Street Sacred is awesome and it is right in the middle of action in Soho just around the corner of Carnaby Street!

Enjoy your coffee! My key rule is that as coffee is for enjoyment I only drink good one!

Rakastan Flat White kahvia.

Grindin lisäksi Lontoossa on muitakin uskomattoman hyviä uusiseelantilaisia kahviloita. Suosittelen kokeilemaan seuraavia!!!

All Press Shoreditchissa.

Flat White Sohossa.

Sacred Sohossa, Highburyssa, Covent Gardenissa ja Westfieldissa.

Nauttikaa kahvista! Kahvi on nautintoaine huonoa sellaista en suuhuni pistä!

My little French kitchen -Pieni ranskalainen keittiöni

You know I love cooking shows, I have noted it several times. If you ask my dear Aussie husband, our TiVo recording space is overloaded of various cooking shows that I record and watch whenever I have a chance to. My new celebrity chef favourite is Cordon Bleu trained Rachel Khoo whose program ”My Little Paris Kitchen” I am absolutely in love with. Rachel Khoo does French cuisine with her own twist -fantabulous! You can find her recipes online so have a look at them. My favourite so far has been Croque Madame muffins -wow. I will make them soon -as soon as my oven has been fixed. I am still waiting, last week British Gas came to fix it but had a wrong spare part -surprise- and this was only fourth attempt to fix it -unreal! Anyway, I will post a recipe here if those Croque Madame muffins are as amazing as they sound.

Tiedätte kuinka rakastan kokkausohjelmia. BBC Good Food täällä Britanniassa tarjoaa huikean määrän erilaisia ohjelmia ja kaikki valtavan korkeatasoisia. Jos kysystte rakkaalta aussimieheltäni meidän nauhoittavan digiboxin tallennustila on pakahtamaisillaan kaikista kokkaus- ja leivontaohjelmista, joita jatkuvasti nauhoitan. Katson niitä aina kun vain voin. Tällä hetkellä ehdoton uusin suosikki julkkiskokkini on Rachel Khoo, jonka ohjelmaa ”My Little Paris Kitchen” tujotan haltioituneena.

My next two Amazon orders will be her two cook books!

Seuraavat Amazon tilaukseni ovat Rachel Khoon kaksi allaolevaa kokkauskirjaa!

The Orange Tree Pub -Pubi Totteridgessa

We love to do day trips at weekends. My dear Aussie husband and I both love discovering new places in London particularly when new pubs are involved. On Saturday we went to this praised and recommended pub in Tottridge called The Orange Tree. I had heard it was good but never did I think it would have been this good. It was like a fine dining restaurant, fantastic atmosphere, beautiful decor and great location and yes, the food was top draw.

—-

Rakastamme  päiväretkiä. Minä ja rakas aussiemieheni yksinkertaisesti nautimme uusien paikkojen katsastamisesta etenkin jos kuvioon kuuluu pubiruokailu. Lauantaina vierailimme eräässä hyvin arvostetussa ja suositellussa pubissa Tottridgessa nimeltä The Orange Tree.

I had this amazing scallops starter. Scallops were seared in the top quality olive oil and served with pineapple salsa, sweet chilli sauce and balsamico. I got so excited about this dish so I prepared the whole fried squid with salsa in the evening. I will post the recipe later :)!

Postaan reseptin pian blogiini!

For the main course I ordered a duck salad. I am getting used to ordering salads as my main. This is due to a fact that I know that every time the main arrives my baby gets hungry too and there is no way I am finishing my meal before feeding her, so the best option is to order something that tastes good even if being cold: salad. With the starter I had Australian Little Yerring Chardonnay. I am a Chardonnay girl from head to toes, but I ordered this wine due to the nostalgic feelings. My dear Aussie husband and I did a trip to Yarra Valley and actually visited Yerring station  a few years ago. In the winery I had this wine last time! With the mains we chose Shiraz-Viognier from the same vineyard. My dear Aussie husband had a seafood linguini as his starter and spit chicken roast as his main. Everything was so delicious that I warmly recommend you to visit this pub. It is like a top class restaurant. The staff is wonderful, food excellent, wine list very interesting and the pub is also very child friendly.

Alkuruoan kanssa tilasin valkoviinia, australialaista Little Yerring Chardonnayta.

I hope you had a great weekend too!

Toivottavasti teilläkin oli onnistunut viikonloppu!

Feel Good Food -Ruoanlaittolehden huumassa

I went to the store today and when I saw this Feel Good Food magazine and glimpsed it through I could not walk out of the store without buying it. The recipes look amazing, fabulous, tasty and mouthwatering. I am quite picky with the food magazines I buy as I dislike so much recipe fillers. By saying this I mean useless recipes that are not very good but have been added to the magazine to fill up the extra space. After reading this magazine through (whist sitting with my baby on a playmat and playing with her) I became restless. How can I wait until Monday to my cooker to get fixed, particularly when the weekend is coming! I think I may need to test out our microwave’s oven functionality and bake something today..my hands are so restless and I fancy something sweet anyway. I fact I will probably test out the lemon drizzle cupcake recipe…I will post it here in case it is good enough for my taste buds. Anyway, if you have a chance to buy this magazine, go and get it, it is worth every penny! Have a great Friday!

Sunday in Highgate Village -Sunnuntai Highgaten kylässä

As my dad was in town we wanted to take him to one of our favourite pubs The Red Lion and the Sun that I mentioned in my blog post a few weeks ago. This pub is located in Highgate. As the weather was wonderful we thought we would have a lovely walk there. First we crossed our beautiful local park and then showed my dad the high street in Highgate Village.

Koska isäni oli Lontoossa viikonloppuna ajattelimme viedä hänet lempipubiimme The Red Lion and the Sun, josta olenkin jo aiemmin kirjoitellyt blogispostauksessani. Tämä pubi sijaitsee Highgatessa Lontoossa. Ensin kävelimme halki kauniin läheisen puistomme ja sitten suuntasimme kohti Highgatea.

The Highgate Pantry.

I have probably said this multiple times before but I love these small pockets of London that are like villages with all the independent shops, bakeries, butchers, fishmongers, green grocers and cute boutiques. The Highgate Pantry bakery had a mouthwatering window!

Olenkin jo aiemmin sanonut useaan kertaan, että rakastan Lontoon pieniä itsenäisiä kylämäisiä yhteisöjä. Etenkin pohjois Lontoo on täynnä näitä pieniä kaupunginosia kuten Highgate, Hampsted, Highbury, Stoke Newington, Primrose Hill, Winchmore Hill, Muswell Hill, Crouch End. The Highgate Pantry leipomolla oli upea ikkuna.

I usually try not to support the chains, but Le Pain de Quotidien has quality food and all organic too!

Yritän useimmiten välttää ketjuja, mutta Le Pain de Quotidien on loistava. Ruoan laatu on hyvää ja kaikki luomua.

A lovely fruiterers in Highgate. — Ihana hedelmäkauppa Highgatessa.

The place called Limone in Highgate has a great selection of dairy and gluten free cakes. So all of you who are looking for finding some special diet coffee places in North London, this is one for you! Yesterday Limone had a tasty selection of special diet treats and one particularly interesting cake -lemon rosemary cake that was dairy free! Inspired by this, I will definitely bake some lemon drizzle cake next week when our cooker will be finally fixed. British Gas promised it to be ready next Monday -finally! Fingers crossed.

Jos etsit erityisruokavalioon sopivaa kahvipaikkaa Pohjois-Lontoossa Limone Highgatessa on mahtava. Se tarjoaa kotitekoisia maidottomia ja gluteiinittomia kakkuja. Yksi mielenkiintoisemmista oli sitruuna-rosmariini kuivakakku. Kuulosti tosi herkulliselta!

Waterlow Park in Highgate is super beautiful! I recommend a walk in there! I had a lovely Sunday, hopefully you had a relaxing weekend too!

Waterlow puisto Highgatessa on todella kaunis. Suosittelen kävelyä siellä! MInulla oli upea sunnuntaipäivä. Oli niin ihanaa nähdä isää! Toivottavasti teilläkin oli rentouttava viikonloppu!

Our typical Sunday in North London – Sunnuntaimme Pohjois-Lontoossa

Yesterday when the morning was sunny we thought we would have a family walk from Muswell Hill to Highgate. We hadn’t done that walk before so we were curious to see what the are between was like. We have our eyes constantly open for new places and potential areas to buy house in. Muswell Hill is one of my favourite places in North London. If you have not been there, go! It is like a small pocket of London and cute own world. It has great shops and cafes and it is super baby friendly too. There is this awesome place called Crocodile Antiques . It has a fantastic shop attached to a love coffee shop. They have play corner for kids and in general lovely atmosphere. Muswell Hill has lots of non-mainstream shops which I prefer.  There is a shop called COOK.  I love the concept of this place. It sells gourmet style pre-made meals, lots of Indian food and wonderful cakes and desserts! Every meal has a signature of a chef who cooked it! I think this must be the dream of any busy housewife at Muswell Hill if surprise dinner guests arrive!

P1060955

These days Planet Organic is my favourite store to do our family grocery shopping  in! There is one in Muswell Hill and the other one on Essex Road, both North London. The store has a great selection of organic food, and goodies! They do home deliveries too!

Image

From Muswell Hill we chose a nice road to walk to Highgate. We passed beautiful houses and walked across Highgate Wood, a wonderful forest like park! The air smelled so fresh that it felt almost like being at the countryside.

After arriving to Highgate village we went to this fantastic and cosy pub called Red Lion and the Sun. The food was excellent, service really good and pub so popular and crowded that we go the last table they had, so next time we need to book a table well advance! This pub is the place to be on Sundays. I warmly recommend it. It was a find!

photo (5)

We had a lovely Sunday.

I also have to mention that my baby is so good. During the whole long (3h) lunch in the pub she was happily sitting in her highchair and being social and charming all the people around her. The group of people in the next table to us was admiring her and her huge blue icy eyes. I definitely feel so thankful for having such a lovely daughter, but it has been a long journey and the allergy problems messed up our happiness for a long time so I feel like as a family we deserve this. I am glad to get the happiness back and say I finally fully enjoy my motherhood.

Last night I realised I have been adding very few posts about our travels and I think in addition to the recipes I will be adding lots of traveling tips and accommodation recommendations as we have found so many lovely places to stay and visit whilst traveling around Europe. I hope you find them useful for your travels!

Have  a wonderful Monday!

Surprise Saturday pampering -Lauantain yllätyshemmottelu

My dear Aussie husband surprised me on Friday night.  I was having a lovely glass of Chardonnay in a local pub with my Norwegian friend. We had a proper girls’ evening, talking rubbish and having great time.  After coming back home I went to change my nighty on when I suddenly noticed there was a small piece of paper on my pillow in the bed. There was a poorly drawn heart on it and my name written with wonky handwriting. I opened it and there was a surprise full body massage reservation done for the Saturday midday to one of the most amazing local beauty salons. I was wordless. How sweet was that?

In the Saturday morning we did a walk in our new neighbourhood that I am absolutely in love with. A couple of months ago we decided to move to a bit more North London and get a big place for ourselves with the beautiful back garden and a small ”guest wing” as we call it. With the baby girl it is nice to have more space, two levels and big kitchen to do my cooking in.

I haven’t posted any photos of our new place. I love our rose gate in the backyard.

photo (57)
The neighbourhood has just more and more stunning houses nearby and I love admiring them. This was what we discovered whilst doing our morning walk in the morning. Pretty!

photo (55)

We had a cup of tasty coffee in our local Italian brasserie before I headed to enjoy my massage.

photo (56)
The place I had my massage in is called ”House of Vanity”. It is such an amazing beauty salon. So luxurious and the massage was one of the best I have ever had, even the massage I once got in a fancy Alpine resort cannot beat it. It is so difficult to find a good massager and I think now I have found one so I will return to this salon..soon. Breastfeeding and nigh time wake ups have really made my shoulders and neck tight so a good massage is worth every single penny!

What a relaxing Saturday afternoon. I feel like a human again. London is great! I have a peace of mind (and body too!).

Cheerful Amsterdam -Iloinen Amsterdam

The other weekend we travelled to Amsterdam. Our Australian friend married a Dutch lady and we were invited to the wedding reception that was held in a lovely restaurant boat. We enjoyed catching up with our friends, sipping bubbles and nibbling canapés. Our little girl is such a social butterfly that she seemed to be enjoying her time too. Our trip was fantastic overall. Baby slept beautifully and was well in general and we had lovely couple’s time when she was napping!

Image

We stayed in a great location near Vondelpark where we were able to spot all the beautiful villas overlooking to the park ponds. If you go to Amsterdam this park is on the list to do with babies and toddlers. It is also a very romantic park for couple’s picnics!

Image

Our hotel was a private suite residence called Prince Henry. Fabulous! The hotel had only a few rooms for guests so it was quite intimate in a good way. The owner was the sweetest lady you can possible imagine. She had a ”happy hour” every day meaning she served fantastic home made cocktail snacks and cakes downstairs. There was also a fridge downstairs full of rose and white wine in addition to Dutch beer and other refreshments and it was free for the guests without any extra charge!!  We definitely drank our share of white and rose wine in the warm summer evenings! The apartment suite we stayed in was had nostalgic glamour, old furniture and dark wood and marble. Gorgeous! I have to mention here that my dear Aussie husband is the best travel agent I have ever met. He surprises me time after another with the most amazing accommodation and location!

Image

We had to try the funny local brasserie chain called Bagels and Beans!
Image

It was good but maybe a bit overrated, I mean coffee was nice and bagels good but I think it is all about the concept rather than the flavour. I like their fair trade approach though!
Image

Amsterdam is really beautiful. It is one of those cities that I could easily live in, although Copenhagen is still my all time favourite! I love to see people exercising in the park and riding bicycles everywhere with their small ones in front or back of the bike! After a long walk we found a great pub or should I say beer house and I had a very interesting drink. It was a light beer but it had some caramel flavour added to it such as it tasted more like a dark Belgian style Trappist beer (that I bye the way absolutely love!). It reminded me of my exchange student year in France, Strasbourg, where the bars served all sort of flavoured beers. Well, soon we will be traveling to Belgium so I can taste some of my favourite local Trappist beers!
Image

I found a crazy American store that sold all the goodies so I couldn’t resist and poked my head in…

Image

During this trip we mainly cooked dinners at the apartment hotel. It was easier with a small baby. Maybe in a half an year time we can go dining out without a hassle. This trip was mainly just relaxing and we didn’t have any specific restaurants in our minds so from culinary point of view the trip was pretty average. With the special diet I am on during this breastfeeding period, dining out is quite difficult. Being so, I may need to wait for a couple of more months or so until I can go and enjoy the amazing restaurant dinners. I already know which London fine dining restaurant I will try when we will have a couple’s night out! It will be L’Autre Pied in Marylebone. Anyway, until then I keep on cooking as finely as I can at home!

Below a picture that is a must-do in Amsterdam!

My Sunday in London -Sunnuntai Lontoossa

Our Sunday tradition has been to go to Shoreditch markets. We started our day there. It is a culinary experience without a comparison. All the cuisines from around the world are gathered in the industrial style halls in East London. You can see people cooking the food in front of you and you can walk from stall to stall and buy whatever you fancy.

I love cakes so I toured around the most amazing looking cupcake and cake stalls…

Image

These cupcakes you can order online:

Image

These ones looked so tasty too…

Image

My dear Aussie husband is more into savoury things so he was admiring the world cuisine..

Image

We ended up buying fantastic South American meals in the stall below. The meal consisted of pulled pork, some magical sauce, panfried bananas and arepas which are corn pancakes. These pancakes were super interesting. They are only made out of corn flour and water but due to its starchy consistency the corn flour keeps the pancakes together. Yummy!

Image

The corn flour was a bit like Maizena (see the picture below). I think I may try to make arepas and then some panfried bananas and meat to go with them -it was a genius combination!

Image

In the markets they also have some vintage clothing and young designers selling their art and clothes! I found a mumpreneur, who made printed baby clothes out of  Fairtrade organic cotton. The material was lovely and prints very funny so I could not resist myself. She also personalised the clothing by printing the name of the child on the back of the clothes so I bought a pink T-shirt sayong ”Milkaholic” with my baby girl’s name written on it. I loved the prints: ”I drink myself to sleep”, ”Milkaholic” etc. This kind of shirt or romper would be a great gift to any baby! You can by them online so check out the site if you are interested: Smelly babies
Image

After the markets we were full of food but felt like a good cup of coffee so we ended up to the New Zealander coffee place called All Press. They make the most delicious Flat Whites in town and they also make soy versions of them so I got one! Oh how wonderful it was…again..

Image

From East London we decided to head to West End just to experience the contrast between these two worlds. We love to return to West End regularly as we used to live there before having our baby girl. We lived only a few streets behind Oxford street in the peaceful Marylebone and enjoyed our Central London time. It was amazing to walk home after a big night out. It was easy to go to the theatre as they were just around the corner and of course for a shopaholic like myself living next to the world’s most famous department stores was like a heaven! We went for drinks to one of my favourite places, a small mews called Lancashire court. It has quite a few sophisticated wine and cocktail bars, outdoor terraces and a great atmosphere. I had a tasty glass of Chardonnay in Mews of Mayfair

Image

Mews of Mayfair has also a fine dining restaurant downstairs that I can warmly recommend to anyone. You can book it sometimes on Toptable too.

What a great day. It was one of those days when I felt that I am so lucky to live in this wonderful and exciting city. London is one of the kind. It will be hard to leave it behind one day..we’ll see if we ever will. Last night after our baby girl fell asleep and we had our parents’ moment we both agreed how wonderful it is to live in Europe, particularly in London. The quality of life here is just phenomenally good and every day is more exciting than the other.

St Giles Cafe in Oxford

We went to Oxford last weekend. Our friend got married there and we had an amazing wedding party in the most prestigious location you can imagine. Bodleian Library at the Divinity School and the kick on party was in the Rhodes House! The buildings just blow out your mind. They are old and beautiful and you can only imagine how many stories they capture.

This wedding party was the first time my dear Aussie husband and I went out together after the baby was born. My father and brother flew all the way from Finland to babysit..and they were amazing babysitters! No emergency text messages during the party but I was able to relax and enjoy (although I missed my darling girl sooooo much!!!).

Anyway, on the following day we went for the breakfast and found this lovely local coffee house nearby the university. It was called St Giles Cafe. It had cosy home feeling, everything was baked and prepared there and service was exceptionally friendly!

Image

They served the best home made honey yoghurt granola in this place!! It was fantastic! It was served in the individual glass pot and had home made berry compote in the bottom. Yummy!!!

Image

The full English breakfast was excellent too, my dear Aussie husband, brother and father ate that 🙂
